Girls in Gear is Looking for Volunteers

Girls in Gear is looking for enthusiastic volunteers of all biking abilities and gender identities to lead our easy-to-follow curriculum for the fall season riders. Groups meet once a week for eight weeks across Morris County and the surrounding area. Weekly meetings focus on a mix of emotional development, conversations, bike maintenance, and riding skills. The goal of the program is to introduce the joy of safe cycling to young riders while creating a supportive environment fostering personal growth. We host unique programs for riders ages 5-7, 8-10, 11-13, and 14+. Email Gabrielle Rossi at gabrielle@girlsingear.org for more information about specific locations.

Neither coaching nor biking experience is required. All you need to bring is your most joyful and dynamic self – we’ll provide the rest. All coaches receive training and are supported by staff throughout their volunteer experience. We supply all lesson plans and coaching materials. Learn more about getting involved in your community at: girlsingear.org.

Engage with YOUR bike club

Maybe you’ve been a member of MAFW for years and years, or perhaps you are a relatively new member.  Whichever designation applies to you, just HOW ENGAGED are you with YOUR bike club?

Do you join in on club rides as your schedule permits?  Attend our picnics or other social events (now that we’ve resumed these after the COVID hiatus)?  Or perhaps you are one of our dedicated ride leaders?  When you encounter cyclists who aren’t club members, do you tell them about our club and encourage them to join?

There are plenty of opportunities for becoming even more active within the club. We are always looking for more RIDE LEADERS, especially at some of the faster paces.  Lead the rides you want to ride!  And, new this year, as a ride leader, you can celebrate your birthday (or other special event), with your fellow club members, and be reimbursed for snacks/treats that you bring to share.  Join the ranks of the ride leaders by contacting our Ride Coordinator, Manny (ridecoordinator@mafw.org).

Want to stay “up to date” on scheduled rides and club events?  You can use your on the club website to indicate what email communications you want to receive from the club.  In the upper right hand corner of the home page, where you see your name, you can select and edit your .  On the page, you can indicate what pace rides you want to hear about (meaning you will receive an automatic email whenever a ride is scheduled at this pace).  And, if you happen to think you get TOO MUCH email from the club, you can tell us you don’t want ANY email from us at all.  Note that is you select the option of “Do not send me ANY email”, that truly means ANY email, including that on scheduled rides.  And while you are looking at the , make sure your emergency contact information, mobile number, and license plate information are correct.

The MAFW election season is upon us, and our biennial (that’s every 2 years) membership meeting and election will be in November (date to be determined).  We have several club leadership positions that will be vacant at the end of this term.  Are you interested in helping plan and carry out club events?  Then become the next Social Coordinator.  How about ensuring there is a robust ride schedule?  Then take over for Manny who is stepping aside after many years as Ride Coordinator.  My term as President is ending, and there are other vacancies as well, including Membership (thanks to Marv for many years of service).  Mark Jay (adventures@mafw.org) and Drew Thraen (safety@mafw.org) are leading the Nominating Committee, and want to hear from YOU if you are interested in a role in club management.  Act NOW!  We need to have our candidate slate finalized by the end of August.

Keep cool for the remaining days of summer.  And remember that sunset is coming earlier each day.  Think about front and rear lights for your bike (a good idea ANY time) and shorten those evening rides as needed!

CYCLING SEMINAR AND OTHER ORGANIZATION EVENTS

To all, CYCLING SEMINAR AT BERNARDS TOWNSHIP LIBRARY-Thanks to Chinmoy for sharing this.  There will be a talk on “The Golden Age of Bicycle Racing in New Jersey” at Bernards Township Library Tuesday Sept 20 7-8pm.  Check attached link for more info.  https://www.bernardslibrary.org/eventcalendar#/events/YDl3MlNwUg/instances/Bki22VdKuP/ SPELLBOUND CENTURY-This past Sat TNT Cycling Club held their annual Spellbound Century with ~1400 cyclists.  Well run and well organized with live music, all you eat pizza and beer (1 glass per rider) at end of the ride.  Event was from Mount Holly and benefited the local charities.  At least a dozen riders from MAFW attended and most of us did the metric century.  Congrats to Gaye and Mark who completed the full century.  It was Mark’s birthday ride but I think he overdid it on the number of miles.  He does not look 100.  Signup for Spellbound 2023 has started and if interested don’t wait until last minute. Spellbound 2022 sold out in March. https://www.spellboundcentury.org/ For other cycling events be sure to check out “Other Organization Events” on our website. Manny

RIDE COORDINATOR UPDATE

I just want to share this message I received from another NJ cycling club.  Very applicable to MAFW and I ask all you to follow these suggestions: As we get deeper into the heat of Summer, I wanted to highlight a few housekeeping notes for all new and existing Club members alike: If you have signed-up for a ride and your plans change, please make sure you correctly sign out of the ride (“Not riding”). This acts as a courtesy to the Ride Leader and fellow members who may be waiting for you at the start. Additionally, if you begin a ride and need to drop-off (abandon the group for whatever reason), please make sure you communicate this to the Ride Leader. This is another courtesy to your fellow members – the group may be waiting for you without realizing you’re off the ride. Finally, please make sure your Contact Information is current and correct. At the very least, please add a cellphone number where you can be reached PLUS a reliable Emergency Contact person as well. GUESTS-Anyone can bring a guest to a ride.  Guests are allowed a couple of rides before they need to join.  Guests need to log into the website, select the ride they want to to do via Ride Sign-in and then fill out the form and sign the waiver.  Recommend ride leaders contact their guest to make sure they have a helmet, water, know to be 30 mins early and know they are signing up for the right pace. Thanks, Manny
