=========How to Park for FREE (almost.. if you're old ;)
It was an unpleasant surprise last fall (2024) to arrive at Allison Park, the start point for
several of our NY rides, and noting that parking meters were installed. The riders, that day,
had to pay $14 for each car to cover the hours we expected to be on our bikes.
The meters apparently don't operate on Wednesdays, but getting to Allison Park
on a business day in the morning rush hour traffic is something that only a masochist
would consider.
Not being one of those, I've been thinking about writing letters to the Palisades Interstate Park Commission,
to whom we (MAF Foundation) donated some permanent safety signs. However,
I stumbled upon some good news (
here): If you're 62+ with a valid NJ driver's license and a
matching, valid NJ vehicle registration (both have the same name) you can get an P.I.P.C. Senior Parking Exemption for $5 that entitles you to
'FREE PARKING' for 12 months (if you ignore a once-a-year $5 fee which is equivalent to 1.8 small coffee's at the Oldwick).
In addition to parking at Allison Park, you can park at Ft. Lee Historic Park (and others) which is
right next to the GWB where we used to park for these rides. This will cut about 3 miles and a miserable hill at the end
of the ride off the NY Rides (when you're tired) and give easy access (right off the parking lot) to an incredible GWB vista.
If you think you 'might' do a Manhattan ride this year I would advise you to apply now rather than wait until just before the ride.
I called the Palisades Interstate Park and they said the fastest way to get the free parking
The person I called said there's some manual work she has to do which slows things down
and, depending upon her workload, it could take several days for the permit to be issued.
However, I applied on a midweek morning when, I suspect, they are not very busy and got confirmation
within a few hours.
The web page error messages are not very good. I didn't enter the required format for my
password and it told me to call rather than tell me what was wrong.
