Calling all Gravel Grinders…. This is one of my favorites, particularly on a beautiful Spring day, with shaded views of the beautiful Delaware River.  Gravel bikes or hybrids/mountain bikes (for very fit riders).  This will be a C pace ride…..

This gravel route starts in Frenchtown on the Delaware & Raritan Canal trail where we will stop in Lambertville for a snack and then cross the bridge to New Hope, where we'll pick up the Historic Delaware Canal Towpath (part of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor) which was used to transport hundreds of tons of goods to NYC and Philadelphia. We’ll ride north with beautiful views of the Delaware, passing the Black Bass Inn and footbridge to Bull Island.  We’ll follow the trail inland and take a brief stop at the Uhlerstown Covered Bridge before heading back to Frenchtown across the bridge.  Ample restrooms along this route on both the NJ and PA sides….

Ok, here we go again.  Sorry for my mistake of scheduling a ride from Far Hills prior to 9:30am.  How about Pluckemin at 8:30am?  This ride is similar to 298, but goes up Philhower +2 miles.  Plus, it has only been ridden 1x in last year.  Via my weather app, the rain may hold out until noon.  Let's get out and ride in cooler temperatures.  Bring water and food for a quick stop at Oldwick. Don't want to be caught in rain on Burnt Mills Road.

Familiar roads in Pluckemin and Tewksbury up to Mountainville with a few less traveled and challenging climbs. Note tour 298 is similar but climbs Guinea Hollow out of Mountainville instead of Philhower. Tour by Greg Stec (2016).

*I would be willing to make this ride early Sunday if it rains Saturday*

The B+ pace is more a strength designation as pace could vary on the hilly terrain.  We will regroup after long climbs, I will discuss this before the ride starts. Otherwise you will need to be able to keep up with the group or ride independently if necessary (this is a no-sweep, drop ride).

Fun ride.  Very scenic.  Some roads rarely traveled.  2 tough hills (Bissell and Somerville).  Up Guinea Hollow and Pottersville as well.  Couple of great downhills (Cokesbury/Water street, and Sawmill/Rockaway).

Come join me on the glorious 4th of July for one of my favorite rides in the club. We start out from Pleasant Valley Park and head towards Chatham. We will make our way through New Providence, Summit, the scenic Watchung Reservation in Mountainside, climb Johnston’s Drive in Watchung, and eventually, and appropriately on July 4th, stop at Washington Rock in Green Brook. Hoping for clear skies in the morning, we will be able to see the New York Skyline 30+ miles away and the top of the towers of the Verrazano Bridge. Right after that, we can stop at a Dunkin Donuts before traveling through Warren Township back to the start in Basking Ridge. Wear your patriotic colors and I hope to see you on the Fourth.

This tour earns it B terrain rating with its sawtooth terrain profile. It heads out east from Pleasant Valley Park and works it way to the Watchung Reservation. It then goes through the town of Watchung on its way up Washington Rock. Enjoy the view there before heading back to the start.

CAUTION: As you leave the park headed toward Valley Rd, the road has a cobblestone section with a stream passing over it. While this is fine for cars, it is extremely dangerous for bicycles. Follow the bike path at the other end of the parking lot that crosses a small bridge by the pool and avoids the dangerous, wet cobblestone section.
Food stops: Shopping center with a Dunkin' and a Bagels-4-U (mile 26).

If no one strongly objects, we can avoid 2 miles of busy road by going on Dutch at mile 34 and then Back Brook.  See https://ridewithgps.com/routes/36635221

As Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen) sang it, tomorrow is going to be “Hot , Hot, Hot”!! To minimize that, I am proposing that we start early and end early by doing a nice short local tour, with Eagles Nest in the end to finish the ride. Temperatures tomorrow at ride start should still be in the 70s so we will avoid most of the heat.  I anticipate we will ride straight through. Hope to see you there tomorrow morning.

It also schedules a stop at Lakeside Bagels, and thus eliminates the risky crossing of Green Pond Road.

We rode most of the streets on this ride during Bob Warrens’ rhododendron tour a number of weeks ago. It takes us through some beautiful areas and travels many residential streets that are low traffic.   We will stop at a gazebo that has bathrooms, and there is a pizza deli down the street on Reinman Road if we need to replenish fluids. You will get a workout with the hills, but it’s a short ride. Come join me on Tuesday.

A scenic figure 8 ride through some of the luxurious residential areas of Far Hills, Liberty Corner, Warren Township and Watchung. Limited food stops: Bring snacks for break at Gazebo, mile 22.5. For those who like a challenge, go straight across Mt Airy Road at mile 4.3 onto Pill Road, take a left at stop sign onto Meeker Road with steep climb, and turn right onto Whitenack Road at next stop sign to get back onto cue sheet at mile 6.0 – this adds 1 mile to ride.

Food store on left at mile 23.2 13: Jody Lefkowitz(C), Dave Hall(C), Alex Rishty(B), Michele Sherrill(C), Fred Bennett(C), Les Garber(C), Richard Poore(C), George Joseph(C), Bob Warren(C), Jay Marowitz(C), Jim Williams(C), Naomi Falangeridden
