Looks to be a beautiful day to head up to the cider mill. There's a tough climb up Cokesbury and then some more gradual climbing up Rockaway, Water, and Mt Grove. We'll make a brief stop in Califon for anyone who needs to use the port-a-john on Bank St, and then there's a gradual climb out up Frog Hollow. We'll be rewarded with some yummy donuts or other treats at the Cider Mill before a nice descent down Black River on our way back to Pickell Park. I will not sweep, but we'll regroup periodically (e.g. Top of Rockaway, Water, Cokesbury, Mt Grove) to keep the group together.

Enjoy three counties while riding through Lebanon, Califon, Hacklebarney and Pottersville. This ride rewards the climber with a beautiful view from atop Mt. Grove on the way into Califon. Similar to tour 991, but crosses Rt 22 at the light in Whitehouse Station & Lebanon.

Here’s a ride that is amazing, and a great tour for Halloween.  This ride has not been scheduled in over a year.
I drove this route in my convertible with the top down to take it all in.  Yes, we will have some climbs, notably Mt. Grove Road, and West Valley Road. But the descent on Hoffman Crossings and views are spectacular. We will cruise along the South Branch of the Raritan River and along freshly paved Vernoy Road. I don’t know of too many rides that will take you directly past the Cider Mill, Alstead Farm, and Cocoluxe, all on the same ride!
After crossing Rt.206 on a diagonal, we get to enjoy a 4 mile descent on Old Gladstone Road/Old Chester Road that takes us into Peapack. Finally, we barely have to climb Whitenack Road and then come home via Mine Brook Road. The scheduled stop would be at the Califon General Store, with restrooms nearby on Bank Street. Of course, we can add an additional quick stop at any of the above mentioned places for cider donuts or desserts.   I am hoping for great weather. The foliage will most likely be near peak.   Come join me on this fabulous ride.

Jeff's ride will leave at 9:30.  You can read his description of Ride #214.

The only route modification is on the return after coming down Somerville Road.

From Jeff: The ongoing construction on Liberty Corner Road will lead us to the usual detour. At the bottom of Somerville Road, stay straight onto Canterbury Way. At the next corner, make a left on Mine Brook. Then make a left on Douglas Road, proceed one mile, right on Liberty Corner Road and you are back on the route. Weather will be seasonally cooler.

I will check if Outdoor Seating is available at the Sterling Diner.  If so, that will be our stop.

If not, then O'Bagel will be the stop which is across from ShopRite on the left side of the road.  Look for Sterling Liquors.

Here’s another route that we haven’t visited in over a year. And, with an extra hours sleep, you should be well rested to handle the climbs. We have a rare start from Chatham High  School, skirt Summit and New Providence, and then tour the scenic Watchung Reservation in Mountainside. From there we work our way through some rarely ridden roads in Berkeley Heights and Watchung, and  travel some familiar roads in Basking Ridge. We will have two climbs, Meeker Road and Old Farm Road, but some nice downhills on  Somerville Road, Pill Hill Road and Old Army Road. I drove this route today and liked it a lot. The views, scenery, foliage and homes we go by will be impressive. Our stop can be at Ridge Bagel, a slight detour at mile 33, or Dunkin Donuts in Bernardsville at mile 35.   Weather will be seasonal, with temps in the 50s. I will happily sweep the slowest rider who can maintain an average pace of 16 mph or more.  Very, very, very short break for bathroom or water if needed. Don't forget that we set the clocks back an hour!  You don't want to wait an hour for the ride to start. Bob Wszolek kindly modified the ride so that two places that had car detours that were walkable for bikes after Ida are bypassed.  The changes are at mile 21ish and mile 27ish. See https://ridewithgps.com/routes/37943015  I went Bob's way on Oct. 6th, and it is great. So let's do it.

11/09Tue 9:30amD+/D/33/0FrenchtownTom Beringer949 - HB Frenchtown Gravel Loop0

Nice day for a gravel ride.  We’ll head south along the D&R trail to Lambertville where we will cross over to New Hope and pick up the D&L trail North to Milford.  We’ll need to take a short (1.4 mile) detour (along Rt 32 which is closed to traffic) to avoid a trail closure on one of the bridges which was compromised by one of our recent storms.

Come join me on what should be a great day!!

This gravel route starts in Frenchtown on the Delaware & Raritan Canal trail where we will stop in Lambertville for a snack and then cross the bridge to New Hope, where we'll pick up the Historic Delaware Canal Towpath (part of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor) which was used to transport hundreds of tons of goods to NYC and Philadelphia. We’ll ride north with beautiful views of the Delaware, passing the Black Bass Inn and footbridge to Bull Island.  We’ll follow the trail inland and take a brief stop at the Uhlerstown Covered Bridge before heading back to Frenchtown across the bridge.  Ample restrooms along this route on both the NJ and PA sides….

Truth is despite the title there is no easier way.

No planned lunch stop.

Bagel store at the end of the ride

This tour is essentially the reverse of our popular #848, with a loop through Cedar Lake & Cooks Pond early on.  It tackles Old Beach Glen early on and is a less steep  challenge.  It also reverses the awkward downhill of the pothole filled portion of Kinnelon Ave & makes it a safer route. It also schedules a stop at Lakeside Bagels, and thus eliminates the risky crossing of Green Pond Road.
