Also looking for volunteers to help set up, cover tables with tablecloths and man the picnic site while folks ride. Need someone to pick up fried chicken at 11:00am. Greatly appreciate help on the above. Feel free to contact me, Mary Nacius, at 908-227-7692 or Nacius4mom@yahoo.com for any questions. Thank you in advance for your help.

Manny and his fellow ride leaders have put together a full ride schedule for the day of the picnic, with rides at all paces between Casual and B+ .  There should be a ride for anyone who is interested….

And for those celebrating milestone birthdays this year, the Milestone Party is scheduled for Wednesday, October 26th at Annabella Ristorante in Whitehouse Station.  The party is free for “milestoners” and $20 for all others.  Please RSVP to Pat Kipp by Friday, October 21st.  (freewheelpat@gmail.com)

RIDE COORDINATOR UPDATE

WHITE OAK PARK-There is a big event at White Oak Park on Sep 24 so please do not schedule any rides on that date.

LIMECREST-Feel free to start scheduling rides from Limecrest on the weekends.

OCT 2 PICNIC-There are a couple of picnic rides that need ride leaders.  Please let me know if you want to lead.  Also if you have suggestions for alternate rides let me know.

MADISONVILLE ROAD DETOUR-The bridge on Madisonville road between Basking Ridge and New Vernon is under construction and closed.  This bridge is on many, many rides that loop around the swamp and head back to Loantaka.   From Basking Ridge, the detour would be to stay straight on N Maple, R onto 202 north, R on either Bailey’s Mill, Glen Alpin or Sand Spring, back to Lee’s Hill road. Thanks to Merritt for this detour suggestion.

Thanks, Manny

EXPANDING CALENDAR

Sorry to bother you again but I got an inquiry that the Oct picnic rides are not shown on the calendar.  What you need to do is expand the calendar beyond Oct 2 since schedule only shows ~2 weeks.   After logging in go to “Rides” > “Schedule”.  Select small calendar to right of “End Date” and select the date you want and then select “List”.  You can also see past rides using the calendar next to “Start Date”.  When using the calendar be sure to not only select a month but also a date.

FALL PICNIC AND OTHER ORGANIZATION EVENTS

FALL PICNIC-MAFW Fall Picnic will be held on Sunday Oct 2 at Pickell Park, Whitehouse Station.   Picnic rides have been posted so you can start signing up for rides.  Don’t forget that you still need to sign up for the picnic via EventBrite.  When you arrive at Pickell Park just a reminder that you need to arrive at least 30 mins before start of your ride.  Rides start at 9am and leave every 5 mins.

OTHER ORGANIZATION EVENTS-On our website we list “Other Organization Events”.  If you have special event ride you want listed let us know.  Next weekend Sat Sept 10 is the Sourland Spectacular.  Parking is at Montgomery High School and registration is across the street at senior citizen building.  If you registered for the ride recommend signing up on our schedule so we know who is going.  Bob Warren and I have signed up as ride leaders for this event but you are not obligated to go with me or Bob.

Sincerely,

Manny

FALL PICNIC AND RIDE LEADER REPORT

Dear Ride Leaders,

FALL PICNIC-Our Fall Picnic will be held at Pickell Park on Sunday Oct 2.  I posted proposed rides for the picnic and we need ride leaders for each ride.  Email me if you want to lead one of the rides.  I made up 2 new rides for D+ and D and working on cue sheets.  These rides are not set in stone so if you have a recommendation that you want to lead let me know.  C ride is the most popular so I have 2 C rides and thanks to Tracy for volunteering to lead one of the C rides.  When I picked these routes I tried to have a rest stop for each ride,  stayed away from one side of Round Valley due to construction,  stayed away from Route 22 and uncontrolled crossings at RT202.  I have the B+, B and C+ rides heading to Sky Manor Airport and they can combine into 1 ride.

RIDE LEADER AWARD-As promised below is the latest ride leader report.  To qualify for the RL award you need to lead 12 rides by Sept 30(cancelled rides count 1/2 ride).  Thanks for helping MAFW by leading rides.

RIDE LEADER REPORT

RIDE LEADER AWARDS-After you do a ride be sure to update your ride so your ride gets counted.  Any issues let me know.  To earn this year’s ride leader award you need to lead 12 rides by Sept 30.  Cancelled rides count as ½ ride.  This will earn you a $50 gift certificate and possibly a ride leader jersey.  To find out how many rides you have led go to “Ride Leader” and select “Rides I led”.  In a week I will send out a list of ride leaders vs rides led and cancellations so you know where you stand.

FALL PICNIC-Fall picnic will be on Oct 2 at Pickell Park in Whitehouse Station.  I will be putting in rides and will be looking for ride leaders.

ALEXAUKEN DETOUR-Bridge out on Alexauken Creek Rd after you leave Lambertville.  Thanks to Les for this detour:

Rt29 go past Alexauken Creek Rd.

R  Seabrook Rd

1.4 miles R Headquarters Rd

3.0 miles R Sandy Ridge/Mt. Airy Rd. becomes Queen Rd. back on route

MAFW Magic??

Are you one of the many MAFW members who believes there is some sort of MAFW magic?  Do you think that new ride routes are created by “ride wizards” and just appear on the club website?  Or that fried chicken, cold drinks and paper plates are delivered to the club picnics by a “picnic drone”?  Or that the newsletter, social media posts, and membership services just “happen”?  Well, you are WRONG!  All these functions that support the club are carried out by VOLUNTEER members, working “behind the scenes” to keep the club running smoothly.

We have had people ask questions like “why don’t we return to having free potluck holiday parties?”  Well guess what, they weren’t really “free”.  We had to rent a place to have the party (not a big expense), and then 8-10 MAFW volunteers did NOT get to enjoy the party as they were busy working (setting up the venue, setting out and replenishing food, cleaning up) while everyone else enjoyed the “free” party.  When we tried to move to a paid event so that everyone could enjoy it, MAFW members weren’t willing to pay for a party, and the club could not afford any event of the quality that we desired.  And there you have it, the reason we no longer have a holiday party…

Right now, we are at a critical time for the club, as many of these positions will be VACANT at the end of the year as the incumbents move on for various reasons.  Without NEW people willing to step up and fill some of these critical functions, the ability of MAFW to operate smoothly is in jeopardy.

At the end of 2022 the following MAFW positions will be VACANT:  President, Vice President, Membership Coordinator, and Social Coordinator.  Please consider whether YOU or someone you know would be interested and willing to serve in one of these positions.  If so, please contact one of the members of our Nominating Committee (headed by Mark Jay:  adventures@mafw.org and Drew Thraen:  safety@mafw.org).

Thanks to all our Ride Leaders and to everyone else who works hard (and often behind the scenes) to make MAFW run.  As our IT coordinator, Jon says, “no one notices when things work fine, but they complain when things don’t.”  We need people to fill these key positions to keep everything running well in the MAFW World.
